Overview:
This course provides a comprehensive joint-by-joint review of common injuries and offers current sports medicine practices which apply to the care of all patients from the recreational participant to the specialized elite athlete. Highlights of this program include: a multidisciplinary faculty, live observed joint examinations using audiovisual aids, optional small group hands-on examination workshops, interactive case sessions, and practical sports medicine topics. A focus on the female athlete is included in special talks in this year's program.

Objectives:
Upon completion of this educational activity, participants should be able to:

  • Improve expertise in conducting specific musculoskeletal examinations;
  • Diagnose common sports-related injuries, including the use of radiologic testing;
  • Compare various treatment options based on evidencebased review of common musculoskeletal problems; including therapeutic choices for pain management;
  • Describe conservative and surgical treatment options for common musculoskeletal problems;
  • Apply concepts from lectures and workshops to the diagnosis and treatment of injuries.

Accreditation:
The University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine (UCSF) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

UCSF designates this educational activity for a maximum of 14.50 AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM, In addition each optional workshop is designated .75 AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM.

Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

This CME activity meets the requirements under California Assembly Bill 1195, continuing education and cultural and linguistic competency.

Family Physicians
This activity, UCSF 5th Annual Primary Care in Sports Medicine: ABCs of Musculoskeletal Care, with a beginning date of December 3, 2010, has been reviewed and is acceptable for up to 15.75 Prescribed credits by the American Academy of Family Physicians.
